Regimental medal awarded for 14 years' service, 5th (Northumberland) Regiment of Foot, 1767 (c)-1805
This is one of the earliest known examples of a regimental medal. It was part of a series of three medals issued for good conduct. A bronze medal was issued for seven years' good conduct and silver and gold medals for 14 and 21 years respectively.
These medals would be worn with pride by those awarded them as at this time there were no official awards for long service and good conduct.
