Sapper's full dress tunic, Corps of Royal Engineers, 1883 (c)
In the early 1880s soldiers wore red tunics for home service. The tight-fitting red tunics were also worn in the Zulu War of 1879 and in Egypt in 1882. But in other hot climates soldiers wore more comfortable white undress jackets and shirts, sometimes dyed khaki.
