M1918 Browning Automatic Rifle, 1940 (c)
The Browning Automatic Rifle (BAR) was designed by John Browning in 1917 to provide American infantrymen with additional firepower. The .30 in calibre BAR used a 20 round magazine and could be hand held or operated from a prone position with a bipod. The BAR was produced in time to see service with US forces in World War One and eventually became standard issue for American troops during World War Two and Korea.
The weapon was produced by a variety of international arms companies and as a result saw service around the world. This particular example was manufactured by the Winchester Repeating Arms Company and is of a type that was issued to the British Home Guard during World War Two.
