Surgeon James Thompson, 100th (or Prince of Wales's Royal Canadian) Regiment of Foot, 1860

Until 1873, when the Army Medical Department was established, each regiment was provided with a surgeon and assistant surgeon, both as commissioned officers. They were supported in their work by other ranks personnel from the Army Hospital Corps.
