Legion of Honour, France, 5th Class, awarded to Colonel (later Major-General Sir) Edward Wetherall, Scots Fusilier Guards, 1856 (c)

Wetherall (1815-1869) was commissioned into the 1st (The Royal) Regiment of Foot in 1834 and served with it during the Canadian Rebellion of 1837. Promoted captain in 1845, he transferred to the Scots Fusilier Guards in 1854. He was appointed Assistant Quartermaster-General in the Army of the East in 1854, and in 1855 became a colonel and aide-de-camp to the Queen.

In spite of the fact that he temporarily commanded the Land Transport Corps in the winter of 1855-1856, he is probably best remembered among historians of the Crimean War (1854-1855) as the officer who led Lord Lucan and the Army's advanced guard down the wrong fork of the road at the beginning of the flank march around Sevastopol on 25 September 1854.
