Diary of Captain Philip Townsend, 22nd Regiment of Foot, 21 October 1756 to 24 July 1758

Philip Townsend (1700-1786) was an Irish gentleman who joined the Army late in life. In 1756 he travelled to North America where he fought against the French in the Seven Years' War (1756-1763). He kept a diary which provides an insight into both frontier warfare and the assault on the important fortress of Louisbourg.
