Manuscript letter from Prince Christian Victor, Assouan [Aswan], 11 September 1898
The letter is addressed to the Prince's commanding officer, Lieutenant-Colonel (later Brigadier General) Horatio Mands. Prince Victor describes the Battle of Omdurman (2 September 1898), in which his boat assisted in protecting the right flank of the British position. A grandson of Queen Victoria, Prince Victor had been commissioned in the 60th King's Royal Rifles in 1888. As well as serving during the 2nd Sudan War (1896-1899), he saw active service on the North West Frontier in 1891.
