Colonel Jerry Francis Dyson, 18th (Bombay) Native Infantry, 1835 (c)

Dyson (1779-1861) joined the Bombay Army as an ensign on 29 May 1798 and was promoted to lieutenant seven months later. In 1801 he served as Adjutant to the 1st Battalion, 8th Bombay Native Infantry, and was appointed captain on 5 December 1805, major on 2 March 1815 and Lieutenant-Colonel, of the 1st Battalion, 12th Bombay Native Infantry, on 2 February 1819. During 1826 Dyson commanded the Malwa Field Force and he was promoted to Colonel of the 18th Bombay Native Infantry on 5 June 1829. When this portrait was painted his battalion was stationed at Kulladghee. After a long career in the Bombay Army Dyson eventually reached the rank of general (20 June 1854).
