The 1st Battalion, Royal Norfolk Regiment, were stationed in Germany in 1946, at Volksdorf, Solingen and at Dempsey Barracks, Sennelager, as part of 31 Infantry Brigade. In 1947 they moved to Wavell Barracks in Berlin.

Lieutenant-General Sir Richard Loudon McCreery (1898-1967) was a veteran of both World Wars. During World War One (1914-1918), he served on the Western Front as an officer with the 12th (Prince of Wales's Royal) Lancers. He was Chief-of-Staff to General Alexander in North Africa in World War Two (1939-1945) and commanded the 8th Army in Italy in 1944 and 1945. After commanding the occupation forces in Austria, McCreery succeeded Field Marshal Montgomery as General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, British Army of the Rhine, in Germany, from 1946 to 1948.
