'Brahuis (Baluchis)', Quetta, 1898 (c)
Photograph from an album compiled by C A Milward, 1st Battalion Wiltshire Regiment and 3rd Regiment of Sikh Infantry Punjab Frontier Force, 1897-1903.
A group of Brahui, a predominantly Sunni Muslim ethnic group dwelling mostly in Baluchistan, in what is now Pakistan. The Brahui language is a Dravidian language, more common in southern India and there are differing opinions as to how this enclave in the north-west of India emerged. At the time of this photograph the Brahui were primarily nomadic herders who lived in tents and temporary camps.
