'Trooper of the XIVth Irregular Cavalry', India, 1846
Watercolour by Lieutenant (later Major General) Charles Walter D'Oyly (1822-1900), 58th [Bengal] Native Infantry, 1844.
A trooper of the 14th Irregular Cavalry with musket slung on his back. The regiment, raised in 1846, mutinied in Jhansi in 1857 and was subsequently disbanded.
From an album of sketches of life in the Indian Army, 1843-1862, including amusing incidents that befell the artist as a subaltern in the 58th Bengal Native Infantry.
D'Oyly sailed to India on the 'Earl of Hardwicke' in August 1842. He served with the 58th as an Ensign and was promoted to Lieutenant in Augist 1844. At the time of the Indian Mutiny (1857-1859) D'Oyly was a Captain. His wife, Emily Jane Nott, died of exposure whilst escaping from Meerut. D'Oyly retired from the Army as a Major General in 1874 and died 11 July 1900 in Blandford, Dorset.
