Message from Major-General Aylmer Hunter-Weston to the 29th Division, prior to the Gallipoli landings, 1915
Aylmer-Watson's service in the Dardanelles was marked by criticism of his abilities and a perceived disregard for the welfare of the troops under his command. They even dubbed him 'The Butcher of Helles' due to his ill-conceived battle plans.
From a collection of documents relating to Lance-Corporal Ismay Scarlett, 2nd Battalion, The Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment), 1899-1917.
