'The Battle of Firket, the back of the British line with the 9th Sudanese Bn and Capt Peake's mule battery in action', 2nd Sudan War, 7th June 1896

The Battle of Firket, or Ferkeh, was fought on the 7 June 1896. British led Egyptian and Sudanese forces defeated a Mahdist force commanded by Emir Osman Azraq while advancing on Dongola in the north of Sudan. The Mahdist forces were taken by surprise and routed by a two pronged attack and and the fortified village of Firket was stormed.
Captain (later Brigadier-General) Malcolm Peake, Royal Artillery, commanded the 37th Battery of Artillery in the Sudan and also fought at Atbara and Omdurman. He was killed in action near Loos on the Western Front on 27 August 1917.
