'H.M. 53rd Foot', 1845 (c)

The 53rd (Shropshire) Regiment of Foot arrived in India in 1844 and went on to fight in the 1st Sikh War (1845-1846) at at Aliwal (1846) and Sobraon (1846). The 53rd was also present at the decisive Battle of Gujerat (1849) during the Second Sikh War (1848-1849).

Bethune Donald Grant (1827-1854) was the son of a surgeon, John Grant and Elizabeth Nicholson Agnes Hayes. He rose to the rank of Lieutenant in the 35th Bengal Native Infantry. He died in Agra on 30 November 1854.
