New Year greetings card, 1885 (c).

A soldier (Tommy Atkins) and his sweetheart (Mary Jane) sit on a bench beneath an umbrella. The umbrella is on a card flap which can be lifted to reveal the couple beneath.

The printed verse accompanying the card reads:

'A warrior bold and damsel fairBeneath a sun-shade satTo fix the wedding then and there, he'd come and did it, pal!May your New Year bring day's asdearAnd all as free from painAs those of Tommy Atkins, here,And his true Mary Jane!'
