Soldiers of the Royal Warwickshire Regiment marching through Portland, Dorset, 5 August 1914
Postcard photograph, World War One, Home Front (1914-1918), 1914.
The soldiers probably belonged to either 1/5th or 1/6th Battalions, units of the Territorial Force. They are shown marching through Portland the day after Britain declared war on Germany. The men took over from the regular garrison which had joined the British Expeditionary Force in its move to the continent. The following March both the 1/5th and 1/6th Battalions were themselves sent to France.
