French bronze medal commemorating the British offensive of 1917
This French medal, produced in 1921, shows a First World War soldier wearing a steel helmet. Steel helmets were introduced as standard issue in early 1916 and were perceived as symbolic of the brutality of trench warfare. British medals used classical rather than contemporary imagery, especially in medals produced after 1918.
