Prior to the separation of British India and Burma in 1937 there were nine battalions of Burma Military Police, predominantly Indian and Gurkha in composition, with around a quarter being Burmese Karens. The units were largely responsible for internal security duties. In 1937 six battalions, those largely Indian and Gurkha in composition, became the Burma Frontier Force and the three remaining battalions were allocated to the Inspector-General of Police, Burma.
