George Keppel, Viscount Bury and 3rd Earl of Albemarle, was part of an influential Dutch family that followed William of Orange to England after the Glorious Revolution. He fought with both Dutch and British forces against the French. Keppel served with the Coldstream Guards and the 1st Regiment of Dragoons. He was present at the Battle of Fontenoy and the Battle of Culloden in 1745. He served as aide-de-camp to the Duke of Cumberland and King George II. Keppel was present at the Battle of Culloden in 1745. In the 1750s Keppel served as Colonel of the 20th Regiment of Foot and Colonel of the 3rd (or The King's Own) Regiment of Dragoons. He had risen to the rank of lieutenant-colonel by the start of the Seven Years War (1756-1763). Keppel led the successful assault on Havana in 1762.

Keppel was made a Knight of the Garter in 1765. He died in 1772, having reached the rank of general.
