Officers' flying helmet worn by Lieutenant T O Clogstoun, Royal Flying Corps, 1917 (c)
The aircraft of the Royal Flying Corps were the eyes of the British Army, directing artillery fire and observing enemy positions. They also fought battles against enemy aircraft and carried out bombing raids. Aircraft cockpits were exposed to the weather so protective clothing, helmets and goggles were worn by plots and observers.
