Indian Army volunteers, 1943 (c)

Recruits line up to enlist with the 5th Mahratta Light Infantry. An Indian recruiting officer shakes the hand of the first recruit. During the Second World War the Indian Army expanded to over two million troops, probably the largest volunteer army in history.
