A new recruit learning drill, 1943 (c)
Photograph, World War Two, India, 1943 (c).
An instructor of the 5th Mahratta Light Infantry puts a new recruit through his paces at the regimental depot at Belgaum. Although military parade was originally taught to recruits so that they would fight effectively in formation on the battlefield, by the 20th century it had taken on a purely ceremonial role. It was also a useful way of installing discipline, teamwork and esprit de corps.
From album of 37 photographs associated with 5th Mahratta Light Infantry, compiled by Major C W Boultwood.
