Pattern 1864 Practice Gymnasia sword
This pattern was the first of the series produced for use in the gymnasium and is akin to the traditional fencing sabre; although infantry officers practised fencing it was mainly seen as essential training for cavalry; the pattern was declared obsolete in 1892.
The blade is curved with a rounded point and could be replaced by unscrewing the pommel. It is engraved 'Royal Military Exhibition, 1890', were it was exhibited.
