Abraham James enlisted as an ensign in 1798. He served with the 67th (South Hampshire) Regiment of Foot which was stationed in India from 1805 until 1827. James reached the rank of major before leaving the Army in 1823. James wrote and illustrated 'Analytical View of the Manual and Platoon Exercises' and this evolved into 'Military Costume of India'. The latter included 34 hand-coloured engraved plates.
