Bronze medal commemorating the death of the Duke Cumberland, 1765
Prince William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland, was the son of King George II. The Seven Years War (1756-1763) was not a success for him, and it brought about his disgrace in 1757 when he signed a convention with the French that was later cancelled by a furious George II. Cumberland was dismissed from his position and resigned all of his commissions in the Army. He died in 1765 at the age of 44.
