Photogravure after Fortunino Matania. Published by The Sphere and Tatler Limited, 1916. From the series 'With the British Army on the Western Front'.
A scene from the Western Front during World War One (1914-1918). British soldiers occupy a ruined building on the front line, in order to direct artillery fire on to German positions. One soldier observes the fall of shells through binoculars while another communicates range corrections to artillery crews by telephone.
