Wheelbarrow Mark 7, Templemore Avenue, Belfast, Northern Ireland, 1977
Photograph, Operation BANNER (1969-2007), 1974-1977.
A Wheelbarrow Mark 7 shown dealing with a suspect car in Templemore Avenue, East Belfast, 1977. A British Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) vehicle, deployed during 'The Troubles' in Northern Ireland. Controlled remotely, it could be used to investigate a suspect explosive device from a relatively safe distance. Its closed-circuit television camera enabled the operator to make a close-up reconnaissance of suspect vehicles and devices. The device's tracks enabled it to negotiate a flight of three or four steps. The hard-earned experience gained in Northern Ireland defusing bombs has been invaluable in later conflicts.
From a group of four photographs of the remotely-controlled 'Wheelbarrow' or Robot Bomb Disposal Vehicle 1974-1977.
