Chapka, officer, East Riding of Yorkshire Yeomanry Cavalry (Territorial Force), 1912 (c)
Black patented leather skull and peak lined with crimson silk. Crown of black American cloth, each corner trimmed with four gilt metal acanthus leaves. At centre front a chapka plate, bearing a gilt metal universal rayed plate, with a silver fox courant above which is the silver royal cypher, 'GRV', for George V, surmounted by a silver monarchial crown. To one side of the fox a laurel spray, to the other, a silver spray of palm. Below all a silver frosted scroll bearing the title, 'East Riding of Yorkshire Imperial Yeomanry'. Below the centre of the scroll a silver rose. White leather inner cap band bearing the numerals, '843' over '5'.
The East Riding of Yorkshire Yeomanry Cavalry was formed in 1902 although predecessor units form the East Riding were raised in the 18th century to meet the threat from Jacobite rebels and French revolutionary forces. It became part of the Territorial Force in 1908 and was expanded during World War One (1914-1918). The unit was converted from cavalry to armour in 1920.
