Temporary grave marker of Second Lieutenant Edward Chambers, 19th Battalion The Lancashire Fusiliers, killed on 1 July 1916.
The Battle of the Somme (1916 ) was one of history's bloodiest engagements. There were 57,000 British casualties on the first day alone. The 19th Battalion recruited in Salford. The huge losses among these 'Pal's Battalions' plunged many such communities into grief.
