'Lieut E. E (sic). Inkson, V.C.', 1902
Cigarette card published by Taddy and Company, Number 63 from the series, 'VC Heroes - Boer War', 1898-1900, a set of 125 cards, 1902.
Captioned, 'Lieut E. E. Inkson, V.C. of the Royal Army Medical Corps, awarded the Victoria Cross for carrying a wounded lieutenant to a place of safety whilst under a heavy fire. Febr. 24th 1900'.
Portrait of Lieutenant (later Colonel) Edgar Thomas (1872-1947) who was awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions on 24 February 1900 during the Boer War (1899-1902). During the action near Colenso, Thomas carried the badly wounded 2nd Lieutenant John G Devenish to safety while under Boer fire.
Cigarette cards were produced from the mid 1870s until the end of World War Two (1939-1945). Used to strengthen thin cigarette packs the cards were quickly developed into advertising devices. Series of cards covering every conceivable subject, from sportsmen to flora and fauna, were produced to encourage collectors and potential smokers alike.
