Lieutenant William Bentinck Cumberland (1833-1928), seated, holding his helmet which includes a leopard skin turban. Cumberland was a 2nd Lieutenant in 1852, gaining the rank of Lieutenant in 1857. He served on the North West Frontier in 1856 and took part in operations in the Miranzai and Kurram Valleys. Cumberland participated in the Bozdar Expedition in 1857. He rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel in 1878, becoming a brevet colonel in 1882 and a honorary major general in 1885. He retired from the Army in 1885 and died in 1928.
