Shako plate, other ranks, 28th (The North Gloucestershire) Regiment of Foot, 1869-1878
This brass badge includes the regimental number within a garter bearing the motto, 'Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense' (Shame on him who thinks evil of it), with laurel wreath surmounted by crown.
The 28th had the distinction of wearing their badge on the front of its headdress and the Egyptian sphinx on the back. The latter commemorated the regiment's back to back stand at Alexandria in 1801.
