Artillery officer's sword belonging to Captain Tyrwhitt Pulman, Bengal Artillery, 1859
Pulman joined the Bengal Artillery in 1842 and became a captain in 1857. He is listed as being on furlough from the 2nd Battery in the 1860 Army List, and so probably bought this unusual sword, with its unfullered blade and non-regulation hilt, while on furlough in Britain. He died in India in 1863. The blade of his sword is engraved with a winged thunderbolt, a coat of arms, mottos, the regimental name and the maker's name (Henry Wilkinson, London). The Wilkinson record describes the blade as, 'Flat solid patent tang' and the hilt as '7th Hussars pattern'.
