Reproduction photograph by Langfier Limited, 1911.
Charles Temple Morris (1876-1956) was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Princess of Wales's Own (Yorkshire Regiment) on 15 May 1897. He transferred to the Indian Army as a lieutenant in 1900 and served with the 82nd Punjabis (later the 5th Battalion, 1st Punjab Regiment). He began World War One as a captain, was promoted to major in 1915, and became a lieutenant colonel in 1921. He was made a colonel in 1925 and retired from the Army in 1931. He died in London in 1956.
The 82nd Punjabis was originally raised as the 29th Madras Battalion in 1788. It became the 2nd Battalion, 11th Regiment of Madras Native Infantry in 1796 and served in the 3rd and 4th Mysore Wars. Renamed the 22nd Madras Native Infantry in 1824, it fought in the 1st Burma War (1824-1826). The word 'Native' was dropped from its title in 1885. With the reform of the Indian Army in 1901, the regiment became the 22nd Madras Infantry. Further reorganisation in 1903 led to the unit being renamed the 82nd Punjabis. In 1922 the unit was amalgamated and formed the 5th Battalion, 1st Punjab Regiment.
