Officers' cap badge, Royal Army Chaplains' Department, 1980 (c)
This badge consists of a wreath, the left half of oak and the right half of laurel, surmounted by a monarchial crown. Superimposed on the wreath is a Maltese Cross with, at its centre, a circlet bearing the motto 'In this sign conquer'. The latter words were said to have been seen by Constantine, Rome's first Christian emperor, in his vision of the cross before the Battle of the Milvian Bridge in 312 AD.
