Shako plate, other ranks, 13th (Light) Dragoons, 1844-1855

Die-struck brass badge with a Maltese cross surmounted by a monarchial crown. The arms of the cross are covered in roundels, the edges raised and frosted. On the reverse, a loop fitting on the centre edge of each transverse arm.

The Regiment had first worn a shako following the regulations of 1812. In 1844 they were issued with a new type shako with this plate and wore it during the Crimean War (1854-1856). The number of the regiment is surrounded by a scroll bearing the motto 'Viret in aeternum' (It Flourishes Forever).

After 1855 a newer smaller shako was introduced. The shako was finally replaced by a busby introduced in 1861, when the Regiment was styled as a hussar regiment.
