Griffith Barracks were originally built as a prison in the early 19th Century, but were transferred to the War Office in 1877. They became known as Wellington Barracks. They were handed over to the Irish Free State in 1922.
After 1922 the barracks were renamed Griffiths Barracks after the founder of Sinn Fein, Arthur Griffiths.
