A Churchill AVRE tank enters a German town, 19 November 1944

Photograph, World War Two, North West Europe (1944-1945), 1944.

The Churchill AVRE (Armoured Vehicle Royal Engineers) tank depicted here probably belonged to the 1st Assault Brigade, Royal Engineers, part of 79th Armoured Division. It is armed with a large 290 mm calibre Petard mortar. The heavy demolition charge it fired could demolish reinforced concrete defensive structures.
