Men of 40 Royal Marine Commando leave a power plant they destroyed at Lake Comacchio, Italy, 11 April 1945

In Italy commandos often operated in the role of assault troops, spearheading larger formations. At Comacchio they captured crossings on the dyke wall of the lake that were vital to the main infantry advance.

From a collection of 650 photographs compiled by the Commando Association.
