'Close up of a dejected looking group of German prisoners captured on the outskirts of Brest', 1944
Official photograph, World War Two, 1944.
The photograph is captioned, 'The Storming of Brest', and records that these prisoners were all paratroopers. Allied forces attempted to storm the strategically important French port of Brest in August 1944. German troops including paratroopers (Fallshirmjagers) fought fiercely for over a month to deny the Allies another vital entry point for the supply of their troops fighting in North West Europe.
