Troops moving ashore from landing craft, Akyab, 1944

Photograph, World War Two, Far East (1941-1945), 1944.

The 15th Corps took Akyab Island in the Arakan following a series of amphibious landings in December 1944. The island held a port and an important airfield which the Allies planned to use as a base from which to deliver supplies to troops in central Burma.
