Photograph, World War Two, Far East (1941-1945), 1945.
US Marines landed on Iwo Jima on 19 February 1945 and spent the following month securing the island in a struggle against an enemy that fought to the bitter end for every yard of territory. Of the 21,000 Japanese soldiers on Iwo Jima at the beginning of the battle, only 216 were taken prisoner.
