Plug bayonet used by British infantry during the War of the Spanish Succession, 1702 (c)
This type of bayonet was designed to fit into the muzzle of a musket and convert it into a pike. But doing this meant the musket was temporarily unable to fire. The plug bayonet was therefore quickly abandoned in favour of the socket bayonet, which fitted around the barrel of the musket and allowed it to fire.
