In 1982, Israel invaded Lebanon to destroy Palestinian Liberation Organisation bases, but this exacerbated a growing sectarian conflict in that country. An international peacekeeping force was sent to Beirut, but it increasingly became a target for the various warring factions and was withdrawn in March 1984.
