Major-General Alexander Dury's notebook concluding the narrative of the transfer of the prisoners from the 'Esperance', from Deal to London and describing Dury's journey with Marshall Belleisle from Putney to Calais in 1745
The narrative of the transfer of the prisoners continues from 3 December 1745 and on reaching Sittingbourne the streets were lined to see them come in. The account concludes with details of the surveillance of the prisoners during their journey. When Marshal Duke of Belleisle was released, it was decided that before he return to France he should stay at Mr Van Weck's house, Putney and see the sights of London with Dury accompanying him.
On their return to Calais in August, Dury described in detail the military honours received by the Marshall as they travelled to Dover. Dury described his arrival in Calais where he received a 'gold-hilted sword' from the Duke. The narrative closes with details of some of the orders given in preparing for the journey back to England.
