A collection of manuscript letters written by Major-General Alexander Dury, 1st Regiment of Foot Guards, to his wife during the expeditions to France in 1758

The series begins at Portsmouth, Carrisbroke and Newport before Dury embarked on the 'Active' on 28 May. On 9 June he was encamped at Chateau Roehew and re-embarked with the force on 12 June. After sailing along the coast they attempted to land at St Malo, but because of bad weather re-embarked and returned to the Isle of Wight on 1 July. On 29 July he was back on 'Active', they landed at Urville on 7 August and entered Cherbourg on 9 August before returning to the 'Active' on the 16. On 22 August they were back in Portland Roads, sailing again on 31 August on what was to be Dury's last mission as he died at St Cas on 11 September.

Associated with the Expeditions to St Malo and Cherbourg during the Seven Years War (1756-1763).
