Diary kept by Captain George Fulton, Bengal Engineers, during the Siege of Lucknow, 5 August - 11 September 1857

George Fulton (1825-1857) played a vital role in the defence of the British Residency at Lucknow when it was besieged during the Indian Mutiny (1857-1859). His duties notably included preparing the defences and waging a grim subterranean battle against enemy miners. This struggle was to claim Fulton's life - he was shot dead on 14 September, just weeks before a relief force arrived.
