Thorneycroft's Mounted Infantry was raised at Pietermaritzburg by Major Alexander Whitelaw Thorneycroft (1859-1931) of the Royal Scots Fusiliers. The corps served in the early stages of the Boer War, including at the Relief of Ladysmith.
