Captain Lord James FitzRoy (1804-1834), 10th Hussars, 1826 (c)
Miniature in watercolour on ivory, by John Cox Dillman Engleheart (1782 (c) -1862), 1826 (c).
James FitzRoy was the youngest son of the 4th Duke of Grafton. In this portrait he wears a blue frock coat of a type which was adopted unofficially by the Light Dragoons and Hussars in about 1814, and often worn long, like dressing gowns by civilians. As such, this portrait provides an interesting record of the unofficial frock coat.
Fitzroy served in the 10th Hussars from 1823 and was promoted Captain in 1826 before resigning his commission in 1829. In 1830 he was elected Member of Parliament for Thetford, but died four years later at the age of thirty.
