Meritorious Service Medal awarded to Sergeant Major John Wing, 17th (The Leicestershire) Regiment of Foot, 1847
Silver medal with, on the obverse, the head of Queen Victoria, with the inscription, 'Victoria Regina'; on the reverse, a crowned laurel wreath inscribed, 'For Meritorious Service'; suspended from a crimson ribbon.
The Meritorious Service Medal (MSM), instituted in 1845, was awarded to sergeants and other senior non-commissioned officers with 'good, faithful, valuable and meritorious service, with conduct judged to be irreproachable throughout'. They had to have at least 20 years service to qualify and already hold the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal. The medal's ribbon was crimson until 1916 when white edges and a white centre were added.
